Water Conservation
Water is needed for survival and a variety of ways to locate it were used by Aboriginal people, depending on the region and environment.
Australia is a very dry continent so traditional knowledge about locating and using water was very important. it included oral instruction, mapping of water sources and setting up markers and identifiers such as scar trees and artwork in the environment.
These markers served as a signpost which Aboriginal People could communicate with each other where water could be found and pass on the responsibility for talking care of and protecting the water source. They used water sparingly and did not waste it.
Fire Stick Farming
Fire stick farming was used by Aboriginal people for thousands of years to impact the landscape. It was adapted succesfully over a vast range of environments to suit individual areas.
After the fire had burnt the undergrowth, new grass and fresh vegetation would grow in its place, this attracted kangaroos and wallabies which could be easily hunted for food. And much more.
There were many advantages to fire stick farming such as-
Fires were lit in 'patches' so Aboriginal people could plant and predict plant growth.
Only small areas of land were burned at a time, this meant that land with new growth was not affected by the fire.
The fires were usually lit in cooler seasons so they did not get out of control.
The fires burnt off undergrowth so they would not kill the larger trees. This meant that there was less wood to burn in the hotter seasons so huge bush fires did not happen.
Tools
Coastal people used fishbone for spear tips while desert people used stone tips.
Tools included knives,scrapers,axe-heads,digging sticks, boomerangs, clubs and spears.
The Aboriginal People were the first to grind the edge of their cutting tools to make them sharper.Ridges are sometimes found in sandstone rocks that show where this happened.
They were also the first to grind seed and make it into flour.
Tools are very important for survival. The tools used by Aboriginal People varied from group to group depending
on the natural features of an area. -
