The ovaries
Definition
Are the components of female reproductive system and the endocrine system.
They lie on either side of the uterus in the true pelvis and are attached to the broad ligaments
Functions
Produce occytes
Produce hormones(oestrogen and progesterone)
Colour
Greyish-white in colour
Position
They attach to the uterus on the either side
Relations
Anterior:to the broad ligaments
Posterior:to the intestines
Lateral:to the infundibulopelvic ligaments and the side walls of the pelvis
Superior:to the fallopian tubes
Medial:to the ovarian ligaments and the uterus
Structure
It is in an unshelled almond shape and size
Approximately 3cm long,2cm wide and 1cm thick
It is composed of medulla (middle) and cortex(covering)
Covered with germoinal epithelium
Medulla(supports framework)
Cortex(is the functioning part of the ovary)
Physiology
They gradually develop and mature
At puberty the ovarian follicle reach their maturity stage
They then burst open approximately every 14 days of 28 day of menstrual cycle
Then the mature ovum expel into peritoneal cavity
