Apps for Good
By Adarshini
KC (Key Concept) : Communities
Connection to Apps : Apps are created to solve the problem of a particular group of people. This group of people can be known as the target audience of the app. The target audience of an app could be grouped together as one community because they share the same problem and are trying to find a solution for that problem. Hence, the target audience of the app could also be considered as the community for which the app was made.
Example : An app called "Simple Note" was created to solve the problem of lack of organized information and was mainly created for students. Since most students face a common problem in organizing their notes, they can be grouped together as the community/the target audience of this app.
My Definition : A community is a group of people or organisms who share similar characteristics, traits, beliefs, values, interests, and/or problems.
GC (Global Context) : Fairness & Development - Social Entrepreneurs
My Definition : Social Entrepreneurs are people who create businesses to support social causes and to help society develop/grow.
Connection to Apps : Apps can be created to spread awareness about certain social causes. They can also be created to solve a social cause or at least take a small step towards solving a social cause.
Example : An app called Feedie was made to solve or at least contribute to the solution of starvation in South Africa. As a user, all you need to do is whenever you are at a restaurant, you need to post a picture on Feedie and the restraunt themselves will donate some money to the app. The app will send the money to the Lunchbox Fund which will provide food for school children in South Africa.
RC 1 (Related Concept) : Innovation
Example : People who have insomnia, anxiety or depression can use an app named "Calm" which has meditation exercises, story narrations and music which calms the user down. This app is innovative because there are very few apps in the market which specifically solve sleep-problems and anxiety through story narrations and music.
Connection to Apps : Apps are innovations because apps can provide a solution for a problem and solutions can be a new thought-process or idea.
My Definition : An innovation is making a commercial product from a new thought-process or idea. However, an invention is the discovery of a completely new concept which has never been found before.
RC 2 (Related Concept) : Collaboration
Connection to Apps : We have to create apps with our group members and we need to collaborate throughout the whole design process in order to come up with a functioning app which solves a problem and has a specific target audience. Throughout the process, we also have to make sure to collaborate with our target audience to understand their problem and their interests/needs/requirements so that we can create a fully functioning and user-friendly app.
My Definition : Collaboration is when a group of people work together and in sync, making sure to cooperate with each other and be open-minded towards each other in order to reach a common end goal
Apps
Solve Problems : Apps are used to solve problems or at least take a small step towards solving a problem.
Target audience : Apps are made for specific target audiences who share the same problem.
SOI : Designers collaborate to understand the community problems which leads to the creation of innovative and impactful solutions.
My interpretation : We as designers need to collaborate so that we can identify common problems in a community and understand the problems. By understanding the urgency behind solving problems, we can find an innovative solution (app) for the problem. By solving the problem of the community, we can help develop society.
