Coordinating Conjunctions
When do you use them?
Each conjunction has a different meaning, and therefore a different time and place where they should be used. But for example, you should use the conjunction "or" when you want to express a choice.
What are they?
They are specific words that have one sole purpose: conjoining a sentence together and giving it meaning. These differentiate from subordinating conjunctions because they put together two independent clauses, instead of an independent clause and a dependent clause
Examples
They wanted to play basketball, but they were lacking a ball.
I was exhausted during the marathon, yet I kept running the whole way.
She didn't want to go to college, for she didn't have enough money to pay for it.
He didn't have money for his lunch, so he borrowed some from me.
He wanted to study chemistry and geography in Germany.
How do you use them?
To use them better, you should remember the acronym "FANBOYS", which stands for every coordinating conjunction: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so.
Subordinating Conjunctions
How do you use them?
Since there are a lot more subordinating conjunctions than coordinating conjunctions, you can't really memorize them all. But what you can do to use them better is separate them into categories based on their meaning, for example: the conjunction "because" is one that expresses reasoning, and the conjunction "before" expresses time.
When do we use them?
With said categories from the previous point, we know when we can use each subordinating conjunction depending on what we need to elaborate on. For exmaple, if we want to express a condition, the conjunctions "unless" or "if" might be good choices to fullfill the sentence.
What are they?
They are words that have the purpose of connecting an independent clause together with a dependent clause. These have the purpose of adding more information to the sentence.
Examples
They will start the presentation whenever we give them the cue.
We have the Internet available to us, whereas our parents didn't.
She fell face first because the floor was wet.
I aced the physics exam, although I didn't even study for it.
He will fail English unless he studies harder.
