Race and Ethnicity
Race: a person's physical characteristics that are biological in nature
E.g Bone structure and skin, hair or eye colour.
Ethnicity: One's Ancestry, cultural practices, language, customs, food and dressing that are associated with an ethnic group
An important influence on their identity, leading to different lifestyles
Ethnicity influences our identity as our way is aligned to the experiences of belonging to an ethnic group.
E.g Withing the Malay race, there are different ethnic groups such as the Bataks, Bugis and Dayaks
Religion
An organised collection of attitudes, beliefs, practices, world views and often worship of a single or multiple gods. The religion individuals believe in may be determined by birth or choice.
Most religions embody a set of shared core beliefs and practices. Believers keep to those beliefs and practices regardless of their nationality/ethnicity. These beliefs will affect the way we interact with others, the choices we make and think. Religion can thus shape practices and actions of believers.
Socio-economic status
The economic situation shared by a group of people and some determinants are occupation, income, education and ownership of wealth
Can shape one's life experiences as it affects the choice of housing, food, entertainment and activities, influencing the circle of friends one interacts with
Three SES groups: Higher SES, Middle SES and Lower SES
Government supports the needs of Lower SES through heathcare and education financing.
Enable them to meet their basic needs and work towards improving their well-being and social mobility.
Education helps to provide more opportunities for them to find jobs and earn a living
Subsidies would help to alleviate some challenges and help subsidise the costs of hiring extra help for the family
The wide the income gap, the greater the socio-economic diversity there is
