Evolution of MIS
1) General Purpose Mainframe Era (1959- present)
The launch of the IBM 360 was a turning point in this era.
Mainframe computers were highly centralised.
Introduced by IBM.
Require professional programmers & system operators to run them.
2) Minicomputer era (1965-present)
Offered more powerful, smaller & computers than IBM's mainframe computers.
Made decentralisation of computers possible.
Introduced by DEC (Digital Equipment Corporation)
Each computer was designed according to specific needs of the user.
3) Personal Computer Era (1981-present)
Wintel computers became standardised in many organisations.
Software tools such as spreadsheets and word processes were introduced in these computers.
IBM introduced the personal computers back in 1981.
5) Enterprise Computing Era (1992-present)
Enterprises found it convenient to store data by maintaining a centralised database.
This era introduced the concept of having centralised data within an organisation.
6) Cloud, Mobile Computing Era (2000-present)
Offers a shared network of resources over a wireless network.
Internet was the innovation that sparked a growth in this era.
4) Client/Server Era (1983-present)
Server computers provide the client computers with the necessary data to be processed.
Computer systems involved having a client computer and a server computer.
