M&P, 603-4 - if we hold the dysconscious perception that some children are at a deficit because of race, poverty, culture, behavior, home language, and so forth and, therefore, are incapable of performing at high levels, we lower our expectations for them. This lowering of expectations affects how we treat the students, and it communicates these lowered expectations to the....students, with the frequent result that the students come to see themselves as being less intelligent or as incapable of doing well in school. These students, thus, often receive a less rigorous curriculum, are held to lesser standards, and often times are placed in special education or lower level classes.
