Phenotypic variations may be brought about by genes, but can be caused by the environment, or a combination of both genes and the environment.

Types of variation:
Discontinuous:
Here, variations take the form of distinct, alternative genotypes with no intermediates.

When plotted, there is no continuous curve.

Continuous:
Here, variations have intermediates or a wide range.

Mutations:

Mutations occurring at the somatic cell level will affect the cells produced. However, mutations are gamete cell level will affect the whole individual. E.g. Cystic fibrosis & Haemophilia.
