Think about elements of each character are essential, and think about which could be changed. Do the witches need to be women? Does the story need to revolve around generals, or could the war be replaced with a different kind of violence/conflict? Does Malcolm need to be a man? does he need to be non-violent? Can some of these characters be cut or consolidated?
