Mastitis
Definition
Inflammation and infection of the breast tissue
Pathophysiology
Infecting organism causes inflammation of the milk ducts resulting in a blockage
Which causes the milk to stagnate in the lobules
This creates conducive environment for bacteria to strive
The breast become engorged and painful with extended blood vessels
Pus and blood may ooze out of the nipples
Nursing management
Administration of antibiotics as prescribed
Wear supportive bra
Clear the breast frequently
After breastfeeding the breast should be expressed gently to relieve engorgement
Clinical manifestations
Pain
Swelling
Red and enlarged oxillary lymph nodes
Pyrexia
Palpable tender lump
Causes
Stagnation of milk
Blocked milk ducts
Bacteria through milk duct opening
Wrong techniques of breastfeeding

Risk for ineffective breastfeeding related to pain

Self care such as to rest and continue with breastfeeding
Drink extra fluids to fight breast infection
