In the face of such difficulty and danger, the deaths of the soldiers are considered heroic. Sherriff recognizes and pays tribute to the heroism of the men of C Company. In this way, he is also recognizing the heroism of the men who died in WW1. In the context of the play, Sherriff shows us that for those men to have worked together as a team, only to give up their lives to certain death, requires courage and, as he ends the play, we are reminded that the price paid for such heroism is blood.
