The Process of Identifying and Helping Students with Special Needs
"It is possible that the problems that are being exhibited by the student may be “solved” with the careful execution of a cooperative plan of action between the teacher and the parents." (Texas Council for Developmental Disabilities, 2013)

"All students begin their educational careers with needs...However, there are children who have unique needs that are atypical for children of their age and may not be within the expertise of the general education classroom teacher...The recognition of a discrepancy in the student’s academic, social/emotional, behavioral, and/or physical ability and his or her age may signal the need for additional academic or behavioral supports."
(Texas Council for Developmental Disabilities, 2013)
-
-
"The student’s parents/guardians should be kept informed of any changes in the student’s progress. If the teacher, after a period of time, determines the problem cannot be controlled with simple classroom interventions, then the teacher should notify the parents/guardians that they will be asking for outside help from a school-based pre-referral team." (Texas Council for Developmental Disabilities, 2013)
If classroom intervention strategies are not successful, it is likely time to refer the student for special education
An Individualized Education Program (IEP) meeting will involve a number of participants and address many aspects of the student's performance and needs.

People involved
School personnel (including general education teachers, special education teachers, counselors, administrators, etc.);

In the preceding video, we can see all the elements and participants in an IEP meeting
Before admittance to an Individualized Education Program, the student will undergo a series of evaluations
to assess the following areas

"Children with intellectual disabilities need some additional support and modifications in their environment, as well as in the type of activities they do."(Therapy Travelers, 2022)
Depending on the needs of the student, there are a variety of changes that can be implemented within the classroom
Envrionmental
-
Dangerous Objects
Keep an items that may be dangerous (sharp objects, cleaning supplies, etc.) out of the classroom or at least out of reach of the student.
-
Teacher/Student Ratio
Likely this is out of the control of the teacher, however it's worth noting that students will benefit from very small class sizes of less than 5 students
-
Flexibility, variety, and choice are keys to successful differentiation
As mentioned above, always document student performance and regularly communicate with the parents
-
-
-
- Implement RTI, differentiation, or alternative methodologies
- Escalation and referral to Special Education
If the student is admitted into an IEP, a team will be formed to act as case workers for the student
