Ethics in Prenatal Genetic Testing
Eugenics
Trying to improve human stock
basically a bunch of racism and manipulation
Nazis did a lot, but copied CA laws
Human sterilization procedures were regular in US
Purpose was to maintain and manipulate political power
Some people today are concerned that modern prenatal testing is a continuation of eugenics
A lot of this comes down to why it is happening and who is mandating it
Many disability advocates are opposed to prenatal testing because they are worried that we are trying to eliminate disabled people from the world before they are born
Genetic counseling
Essential that it happens before the testing is done to determine if it is even necessary
The point is helping people figure out if they should do it and what they would learn from it
Non-Directive Genetic Counseling
Apparently means not judging how things turn out
Expressionist Argument
People feel that the testing of this disability prenatally is a slap to the face and persecution of those who are currently living with the disability
People feel like we are trying to eliminate people in the world who have disabilities
Information provided by genetic counselors was different between patients who had already been born vs. those who had been diagnosed prenatally
Genetic counselors are supposed to ask the patients how they hope to use the results to make an informed decision. But that's not happening all that frequently
