Bright light therapy is under a family of therapeutic techniques called chronotherapy, including BLT, sleep deprivation, and sleep phase advance therapy. These have been developed over the past 50 years. The exact biological functions surrounding BLT are unknown and while it is shown to relate to a therapeutic impact on depressive disorders such as seasonal depressive disorder, it is not known whether it is a cure all for depressive disorders. It is used in this study to trat bipolar disorder, and the impact is looked at to see if there are detriments of its use as well, making this a great marker to determine the safety of sleep therapy for the general public. The study showed that there was no correlation between bipolar disorder and bright light therapy, but it should be understood that bright light therapy is not completely understood while it can have therapeutic effects for seasonal depressive disorder and could be effective for sleep disorders like insomnia.
