there is no cure to completely eradicate migraines but there are medications that can be taken to minimize the frequency or treat the symptoms:
1) acetaminophen - or more commonly known as paracetamol is one of the many medications that can be taken. It reduces pain signals within the nervous system and not at the site itself.
side effects: nausea, upset stomach, trouble falling asleep
2) NSAID's (Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) - By blocking cyclooxygenase nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) decrease the synthesis of prostaglandins, which are involved in the pathophysiology of migraine headaches.
side effects: gastrointestinal bleeding, peptic ulcer, kidney impairment, hemorrhagic diathesis. do not prescribe to females who are pregnant after 30 weeks.
common examples: diclofenac, ibuprofen, naproxen
3) triptans - they work like a brain chemical called serotonin. This helps quiet down overactive pain nerves, by decreasing the release of neuropeptides. it reverses the process that causes migraines. ergotamines are similar to triptans.
side effects: chest pain, neck tightness, limb heaviness, tingling, dizziness, flushed. do not prescribe to people with vascular disease or hypertension.

4) antimetics - They are dopamine antagonists, which means that they block the receptors that allow dopamine, a neurotransmitter, to function.
side effects: drowsiness, akathasia
common examples: diphenhydramine (Benadryl), dimenhydrinate (Dramamine, Gravol)
