Theme: Wanting to Fit in isn't Always Easy: Gutter Child
Loneliness
Being looked at as the enemy all her life first in the mainland because of her being a Gutter child. At the academy as she had a red coat. She was always left to being alone no matter where she was. (through out book)
Everyone leaving her at the academy, she had finally fit in for them, for them to leave again. Making her believe she is meant to be alone. (98)
Growing up in a place where she didn't belong no one was like her, left her in a state of loneliness. There was times where she didn't feel wanted. (57-58)
Her only mother figure dying while she is the only person she had left. Making her go to a new place and try to feel like was cared for. (61)
"I think maybe Violet, Rowan, and Ida have it all wrong. Maybe alone is the hardest way of all" (80) She has and had gone through it she knew and knows what it is like to do it alone.
The Need for Family
She had grown up without her true family, but many people in her life were able to subsitute that in. Ida as a mother, Josephine as a sister, David as a brother, and Duncan as a father figure they all fit together. (Through out book)
Accepting that her plans may have been ruined being stuck in the Gutter, but she still has something or someone that reminds her of her now true family. (368)
Her four friends that accepted her when she was a red coat. She had a need for them and they back her up almost every time. (68-69)
Her son being her first blooded family that felt like she belonged somewhere. (250)
"Most of them were like you. No family to even go to" (202) Many project cases had lost their family they did not really have true blood families like Lima.
Displacement
Learning her true name. She wasn't Elimina, she was Lima and she had a whole new name that she needed to accept. (200)
She never got to grow up in a place she belonged. She was removed from her mother the minute she was born. Then place in a community that had no need for her at all. (10)
Landing up in the Gutter a place she has never been to. It was all new to her, she heard stories, but are they trustworthy. She had an idea, but she was still thrown into this place. (261)
Being placed in Livingstone with no idea of who she truly was being dismay in a new place. (3)
"You might
believe
you are free," he says tilting his head to the side. "You probably
feel
free in some ways based on your upbringing in particular. (31-32) She grew up in a place where she was told she was free, to being placed in an area where she is ward of the nation.
Quest for Discovery
Getting to learn with Rowan's mom and Ida on how it could have been like for her if she was born and stayed in the Gutter. Making her feel as she belonged. (53)
Finding who her real mother was and other reasons on the project cases to really see who she was. Or what she was. (203) and other pages
Finding her self through different steps of her life. Learning throughvthe academy, giving birth, and going to the Gutter gave her new ideas of herself and who she could be. (through out book)
Finding out who she was through different people Mr.Gregors, Ida, Duncan, her Mainland mother. All gave her different aspects of who she was. (Through out book)
I tell myself that everything will be fine and I repeat this over and over. (311) She was trying to feel strong while everything falls apart.
