Structure of stories
-
Shift in time
A&G - In present time, Amir travels to the competition with his teacher. His speech presents the past events of his trauma. This is also shown through a change in font.
-
IA - the narrative switches between Nathalie's childhood and current adolescent experiences, at some times more clearly than others.
-
AD - although the story is written as an account in past tense, with no significant shift in time, it could be said to serve as a warning about the future
Shift in location
A&G - the car and school represent Amir's new more comfortable life, but the war-torn country and horrific journey shown in his speech show the trauma which is still with him.
-
IA - when the story shifts to the seaside and also to Nathalie's aunt's house, this is where we see her become comfortable with who she is, because there is water
DS - no real shift in location, although we hear a description of Syrian desert and city
AD - Although the island locations remain similar, the speaker moves from island to island in search of the last remaining birds to hunt.
Context
-
Range of settings
A&G - the English countryside and a school contrasts against the settings that Amir has to travel through as he flees Iraq.
TH - the description of the bus, the market and the journey are indications that the story is probably set in South Africa or Namibia.
IA - moves between UK and US, main contrast is how Nathalie feels on land and sea.
DS - set in Lindisfarne, descriptions of the Syrian desert and the destroyed Syrian city of Palmyra.
AD - mentions of fishing and whale-hunting, but actually a dystopian view of the future
