Do you agree that society has not become wiser despite being more intelligent?
AGAINST (1)
E: Natural language processing (NLP) enables automatic reading and interpretation of meaning, such as identifying words to certain meaning for users, speeding work up.
E: Through NLP, search engines have become smarter and have evolved beyond simple word searchers. Examples include Google automatically showing personalised flight information based on one's calendar. Such an integrated view empowers the user to make better decisions due to how the search engine optimises data placement at opportune moments.
P: Advancements in artifical intelligence (AI) engines have led to wiser decisions being made.
R: The way information is presented after being processed through the help of AI helps provide humans with greater visibility and hence agency over their decisions.
FOR (1)
P: Pre-conceived notions of society can result in collectively unwise decisions.
E: Brexit
E: What was supposedly a multi-faceted issue in the UK became one centred on immigration. Post-Brexit, UK had reduced say in European matters, and had to negotiate for continued benefits such as the European common market.
R: Despite the people supposedly obtaining the Brexit they voted for, they did not appreciate the unintended consequences, and could not easily hold Brexiters accountable.
Conclusion
Wrap-up: clear that technology has advanced our capabilities in acquiring information, but our cognitive abilities to process information may not have evolved sufficiently.
Punchline: society has certainly become more intelligent, but having too much intelligence could lead to information overload. Without sufficient judgement, information overload can impair or paralyse our decision-making abilities, leading to unwise decisions.
Introduction
Distinguish "wisdom" and "intelligence".
Wisdom: use judgement and knowledge to make decisions.
Intelligence: ability to acquire knowledge and skills
Scoping: intelligence is required to be wise. And society has become more intelligent due to various reasons (e.g. digitalisation)
However, greater intellect has not led to better decisions being made in various domains as intelligence is not the sole ingredient of wisdom. Bad judgement can result in unwise decisions too.
FOR (2)
P: At an individual level, we have greater access to digital technology, but have not leveraged them wisely.
E: Social media addiction, and the rise in mental health issues associated with social media-related issues.
E: The innate desire of humans to compete against one another have led to teenagers exhibiting inferiority complexes, when social media obscures less than desirable images of its users.
R: Such selective comparison highlights our ability to acquire more information but not appreciate the biases on them, resulting in unwise conclusions.
