Had Liberal governments created a more united nation by 1900?
The problems facing the Italian governments
Opposition of Church
The pope told Catholics not to participate in the new state
Priests helped stir up unrest amongst peasantry
Economic problems
High taxes on the poor
North-South divide was increased by northern industrialization
Government debt
Frequent unrest (1893-94 major revolts)
Political problems
Limited Suffrage = most Italians were uninvolved in the new state
Politicians seen as corrupt/ frequent changes in gov
Foreign policy
Italia Irredenta
Government had inferiority complex
Defeat at Adowa in 1896
The political system
Believed in having a parliament which was chosen by the wealthy/educated elite, not the masses.
Most politicians didn't consider spreading wealth to be a priority, balancing the budget and building up Italy's military might was way more important
Liberal politicians who controlled the unification process didn't think ordinary people had the ability to participate in the government
Groups of Politicians did deals amongst themselves to form governments
Corruption was extremely prevalent in local governments
Hence there existed a gulf between "Legal Italy" and "real Italy"
