After founding the city of Panama, Gaspar de Espinoza continued with the exploration of the Isthmus, bordering the western coast to Punta Burica, while maritime expeditions reached the coast of Nicaragua
The land expedition traveled the coasts of the current provinces of Chiriquí and Veraguas. Among other lands that were explored in expeditions.

In 1534, Carlos V of Spain ordered the first study on a proposal for a canal route through the Isthmus of Panama. More than three centuries elapsed before the first construction effort began. The French worked for 20 years, beginning in 1880, but illness and financial problems overcame them.
In 1903, Panama and the United States signed a treaty whereby the United States undertook the construction of an interoceanic canal for ships through the Isthmus of Panama.
