globalisation:
process whereby boundaries between countries are reduced or eliminated allowing individuals, groups and companies to act on a global scale.
-can be described as transforming the different societies of the world into one global society.
-reduction in barriers to trade, communication and transport contributes to this process
global trends:
patterns of social, environmental and economic activity that will have an effect at some stage in the future and require action to be taken at a global level
rising sea levels:
two major causes of rising sea levels are the expansion of the warm water that occurs as it warms and the increase in volume of water that results from the meeting of ice in the earth's polar regions and glaciers
implications for HWB of conflict and mass migration
conflict:
act of terrorism that have deliberately targeted civilians have become more common and more deadly
mass migration:
when conflict occurs, there is a mass migration of people who are either seeking refuge in another country or who are displaced within their own country (internally displaced persons). also refers to movement of large groups of people from one area to another
implications for HWB of world trade and tourism:
world trade:
its the exchange of goods and services between countries. it is cheaper for some countries to import goods than to make them. many low-income countries do not have the production processes available for converting raw materials into valuable consumer goods
=trade allows countries to specialise and enables technologies, skills and ideas to be shared
=it promotes competition, which helps boost innovation and productivity and foster economic growth
=world trade provides job opportunities for local workers, which increases levels of employment
=country's economy and may help to develop small, locally owned businesses. many of these small business owners are women
=export growth has been associated with promoting gender equality. many exporting firms that get set up in low- and middle-income countries employ women
tourism:
one of the worlds fastest growing industries worldwide. it represents international trade in services and in 2015 accounted for 7% of the worlds exports in goods and services of GDP
plays a key role in developing jobs for local people as well as promoting local culture and products. it is a key driver of socioeconomic progress
why is tourism important?
-promotes inclusive and sustainable economic growth
-tourism contributes to social inclusiveness and employment
-promotes resource efficiency and environmental protection
-tourism preserves cultural values, diversity and heritage
-promotes mutual understanding, peace and security
