English for specific purpose (ESP)
WHAT IS ESP?
It is an approach to language learning which is based on learner need. In other words, why does the learner need to learn a foreign language?
It's divided into two main areas:
English for Occupational/Professional Purposes (EAP)
Prepares learners for functioning in a particular profession.
English for Academic Purposes (EAP)
Prepares ss for studying in foreign universities.
DIFFRENCES BETWEEN ESP AND ENGLISH GENERAL PURPOSE (EGP)
ESP
• Syllabus determined in advance of teaching.
• Materials based on ss' needs.
• Analysis of learners' needs.
• Bottom-up approach.
• Teacher and ss are in a cooperative position.
EGP
• Syllabus determined and based on the course.
• Use of "cooked" materials.
• Analysis of linguistic needs.
• Top-down approach.
• Teacher is the expositor and ss are the listeners.
WHAT IS THE ROLE OF THE ESP TEACHER?
1. TEACHER
The teacher has the opportunity to draw on ss' knowledge of the content in order to meet the specific needs of the learners and adopt the methodology
and functions of the target discipline.
2. COLLABORATOR
It is believed that subject-specific work is often best approached through collaboration with subject specialist.
3. COURSE DESIGNER AND MATERIALS PROVIDED
ESP practitioners are often required to design courses and prepare teaching materials.
4. RESEARCHER
Teachers carrying out a needs analysiss, designing a course or writing teaching materials need to be capable of incorporating the fidings of the research.
5. EVALUATOR
Teachers assess students’ progress and the effectiveness of ESP courses.
