What is ESP?
In 1987 Hutchinson and Waters define ESP as an approach to language learning which is based on learner need.
Dudley Evans and St John in 1998 define ESP in terms of “absolute” and “variable” characteristics.
ESP is centred on the language appropriate to these activities in terms of grammar, lexis, register, study skills, discourse and genre.
ESP makes use of the underlying methodology and activities of the discipline it serves
ESP is defined to meet specific needs of the learners
What is the difference between English for Specific Purposes and General English?
''in theory nothing, in practise a great deal' said Hutchinson and Waters in 1987
.ESP focuses on language used in a real professional context rather than teaching grammatical structures and vocabulary .
Unlike General English, which is often separated from students' future situations, ESP content is embedded in a subject area related to students' present and future situations.
What is the role of the ESP teacher (practitioner)?
The teacher has an important and special part by following these 5 functions
teaching (didactics)
designing the course, the choice and/or preparation of teaching materials
co-operation with academic teachers and/or employers
carrying out analyses of the students needs, target situation and discourse
providing an evaluation of the students’ progress and an evaluation of the course.
