Types
Aspersion
- the act of sprinkling with holy water
Affusion
- the act of pouring holy water
Immersion
- the act of completely immersing in holy water, especially the head
Symbols
Words
- these words invoke the Triune God (trinity of god): the father, son or holy spirit, which is the basis of the belief structure of the christian faith.
Water
- reflects the washing away of sins. an adult going under the water represents dying to the old self and the old life. coming up out of the water represents new life.
Sacred Chrism
- symbolises the gift of the holy spirit and consecration as prophet, priest or king.
White Garment
- symbolises the baptised person has been 'clothed in christ'. also reflects purity.
Lit Candle
- christ is the light of the world and the candle links the baptismal concepts of death of sin and new life in christ with the death and resurrection of christ.
Process
1. Reception of the Child
- the priest greets the child's parents and all present. he reminds the parents that children are a gift from god and that it is their duty to bring the child up to love god and neighbours. the priest, parents and godparent then claim the child for christ and trace the cross on the childs forehead.
2. Celebration of God's Word
- one or two of the following gospel passages are read: John 3:1-5 (jesus and nicodemus talking about god's kindgom), Matthew 28:18-20 (jesus sends the apostles to preach and baptise), Mark 1:9-11 (the baptism of jesus) and Mark 10:13-16 (let the children come to me.
3. Celebration of the Sacrament
- the pries blesses the water for baptism. the parents and godparents make known their faith by saying the apostles creed.
- the priest says "i baptise you in the name of the father" (pours water on child's head the first time), "and of the son" (second time), "and of the holy spirit" (third time)
4. Conclusion of the Rite
- the people pray the lord's prayer and the priest blesses the parents, godparents and the child. everyone answers "amen."
Significance
Individual
- indicates the individual (or parents)'s desire to follow jesus' example of his own baptism.
- a public message of faith. baptism is an external symbol of an internal or spiritual commitment.
- sharing in the death and resurrection of christ.
Community
- with each baptised person reborn into the life of the risen christ the church and the whole christian community becomes stronger.
- christians are reborn into a new life with jesus.
- baptism is an entry point to the oneness or unity into the life of the church.
- baptism initiates the individual into sharing the mission of jesus into the world
