Principles
Dignity of the Human Person
- human life possesses an intrinsic dignity and value.
- all human life is to be valued from conception to death.
- value of all life- even if people believe that another person may not have the quality of life as determined by society. all christians must respect life as a gift given by God.
Life Has Inherent Value
- the value of all human lives is equal, regardless of other factors.
- humans have been created by god and therefore have been created good. it is believes that humans make choices based on values and conscience.
- all life should be treated with respect; stem cell research, organ donation, cloning, etc.
Image and Likeness of God
- humans are privileged to be created in the image of god. with that, comes the responsibility of living lives based on the teaching of the kingdom of god.
- each individual is important and part of god's plan for mankind.
Care, Compassion and Love
- love for all people (agape- compassionate, unconditional, empathetic): parable of the good samaritan (lk 10:25)
- love of god and neighbour (rom 13:9-10)
- golden rule (mt 7:12)
The Sanctity of Life
- birth and death are part of life process created by god, so respect life.
- life is a gift from god, the creator and it must be treated as precious.
- only god creates and takes away life.
- all life is to be respected. even if the life of the sinner has the hope of redemption.

- as christians we are called to be stewards of creation
Influences
Influences
- making pro life choices
- respecting the sanctity of life
- not tampering with genetic code as humans do not yet fully understand the consequences
- upsetting the ecological balance and fragility of the universe
- being stewards means looking after ant not changing things to suit human needs and desires.
Other Influences
- christians set out to demonstrate love (agape) ad their actions should be directly linked to the message of love demonstrated by jesus in the gospels.
- christian ethics provide guidance for christians so that their daily living is consistent with bringing about the kingdom of god.
- christian adherents should avoid any actions that violate the principles of bioethical teachings such as the sanctity and inherent value of human life and the respect for the dignity of each human person.
Denominations
- christian denominations place varying emphasis on sources and principles of ethical teachings.
- protestant: scriptural; anglican: traditional; catholic: traditional, scriptural and logical; orthodox: scriptural and traditional; pentecostal: logical and scriptural.
Bioethical
Issues
Stem Cells
- distinction between embryonic, umbilical cord, and adult stem cells.
- consensus not apparent across denominations due to differing interpretations on when human life begins.
- fails to adhere to the principles relating to the sanctity and inherent value of life and the dignity of the human person.
Abortion
- the destruction of the embryo or foetus once conception takes place within the womb.
- there is variation within traditions. for catholics there is no abortion but for anglican there is abortion but it becomes a more serious matter as the time of the pregnancy progresses. at 10 days there is no issue but at 28 weeks it is a serious issue.
Euthanasia
- any actions, whether passive or active, bringing about death more quickly than would have occurred naturally.
- christ's suffering is a demonstration of what it is like to be human. jesus' passion defined suffering.
- releasing humans from the suffering violates the divine law.
- the difference between ordinary means and extra-ordinary means of prolonging life and suicide- going against the sanctity of life.
