Communicating individual interests, needs, and rights
Self-advocacy
Self-awareness- Being aware of different aspects of the self including traits, behaviors, and feelings.
Having a complete understanding of one's disability and how it affects them.
It's important for individuals to know the laws that define their rights so that they can effectively advocate for themselves.
Advocacy communication- any planned communication that seeks to achieve the communication goals: to inform, to persuade, and move to action.
It's essential that individuals are able to take responsibility and self-advocate so that they can stand up for themselves.
Self-Awareness and Disability Knowledge
Individuals needs to establish what their dreams and aspirations are and advocate for those being the focus of their goals.
Individuals with disabilities need to know what a disability is and what their specific disability is.
Individuals should have an understanding of the identification process.
Self-assessments should be used to help individuals develop self-understanding in the areas of self-concept, self-esteem, self-efficacy, and the autobiographical self.
Disability Laws
IDEA- The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act ensures that all children with disabilities are entitled to a free appropriate public education to meet their unique needs and prepare them for further education, employment, and independent living.
504 Plan- A plan developed to ensure that a child who has a disability under the law receives accommodations that will ensure their academic success and access to the learning environment.
ADA- The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in several areas, including employment, transportation, public accommodations, communications, and access to state and local government programs and services.
Individuals with disabilities are given legal rights and responsibilities that they need to be aware of in order to be self-aware and self advocate.
Abilities and Needs
Individuals need to be aware of their own abilities and needs.
Individuals should be aware of the organizations that are available to them and that would support their wants and needs.
Individuals should know their study skills so that they can do what works best for them.
Individuals should be self-aware of their personality and how that impacts their behavior and academics.
Communication Skills
Successful self-advocacy depends on important messages being communicated.
Self-awareness helps you communicate with others on a deeper level because you make them feel valued and important.
Individuals should use assertive communication, which is communicating and expressing thoughts, feelings, and opinions in a way that makes views and needs clearly understood by others, without putting down their thoughts, feelings, or opinions.
