CAUSES OF THE FLOOD

Human causes:
The river has not been dredged properly for twenty years. This process involves digging up weeds, mud and rubbish from the riverbeds. The river Parrett, in particular, was blocked and in desperate need of dredging. The process
Campaigners believe that, if the river had been dredged, then the river would have been deeper and wider. This would have created more capacity to carry away the floodwater.

Building has developed on the floodplain, much of which is below sea level.
