Link to society: This may be the reason why some people stay in Afghanistan or come back, because they are in denial of the fact that the events and treatment that afflicts them are poor. They do not want to accept that Afghanistan is no longer an ideal place to inhabit, past the Golden Age. Other people outside of Afghanistan are able to perceive its horrors and are able to accept that it is inhabitable. However, people that have lived there, especially before the Golden Age, have good memories associated with the country. This makes it difficult for them to decide to leave. It is an uncomfortable thought that the place a person once resided in comfort is no longer safe, so they may be in denial. They satisfy the id’s thanatos, directing it inwards by reliving trauma. It is easy to hide this denial because of the loyalty principle in the Pashtunwali, which indicates that a person maintains honour if they stay in their nation, unconditionally.
