MANAGEMENT AND COMPLICATIONS
MANAGEMENT
History
Duration of symptoms
Clinical examination
Radiology
Chest X ray
Microbiology tests (to see the specific organisms)
Blood cultures
Sputum cultures
Bronchoscopy
lavage fluid
COMPLICATIONS
EMPYEMA
Definition:collection of pus within the pleural cavity
Investigations
Chest X-ray
Aspirate pleural fluid (contains abundant neutrophils) for cytology and microbiology
Treatment
Antibiotics, +/- chest drain
LUNG ABSCESS
a pus-filled cavity in your lung surrounded by inflamed tissue
Definition:
Localised area of suppurative necrosis within the pulmonary parenchyma
lead to formation of one/more cavities
There are presence of anaerobic bacteria in almost lung abscess
Treatment
-Antibiotic
-Surgical drainage
Aetiology
Aspiration of infected material
Aspiration of gastric contents
Complication of bacterial pneumonia
Bronchial obstruction
eg neoplasm (An abnormal mass of tissue that forms when cells grow and divide more than they should or do not die when they should)
Septic embolus (an obstruction of a blood vessel, typically by an infected thrombus that has traveled through the bloodstream from a distant infectious source and blocked a blood vessel)
Hematogenous spread of bacteria
