Creation of class, ethnic and national identity
The family's role
Families pass down their own ethnic identity as their kids are apart of it too by blood by passing down the language spoken, food eaten, clothes worn, traditions etc
Parents may encourage national identity via supporting sports team but all of this is less likely done in working class families as it's argued they don't have that type of culture to transmit
The school's role
-
It is believed the education system is somewhat discriminatory, especially racist, giving unjust treatment to POCs which could affect their desire to connect to their ethnicity
The media's role
Media often influences class identity by portraying the lower class people as lazy and given negative labels
-
Peer group's role
Peer groups may be made up of the same social class and put pressure to change/ignore their identity to fit in
Some sociologists think peer groups protect POCs against racism and give their members a collective identity
