Epidemiology
The incidence of traveler’s diarrhea has decreased in countries with increasing economies and in some previously high-risk destinations with improved tourism infrastructure. 9 South Asia and West/Central Africa remain the destinations with the highest risk of traveler’s diarrhea.
Risk Factor
-Adventure travel, visiting friends and relatives
-Age
-Lack of caution in beverage and food selection
-Use of proton pump inhibitor therapy
-Certain genetic factors (mostly polymorphism associations)

Etiology/Microbiology
-Is caused by ingestion of fecally contaminated food and beverages.
-Most cases of traveler’s diarrhea are caused by bacterial enteropathogens.
