elements and compounds
Everything in the known universe is made up of the elements found on the periodic table. There are over 100 different elements, which are made up of atoms.
Particle diagrams are used to help explain elements, compounds and mixtures.
Some elements exist as individual atoms, but some bond together to form molecules of atoms of the same element.
-
symbols
-
An element’s chemical symbol is a single capital letter or a capital letter followed by a lower case letter.
-
metals and acids
-
When an acid reacts with a metal, the products are a salt and hydrogen.
-
displacement reactions
-
A more reactive element can displace a less reactive element out of its compound during a chemical reaction.
Displacement reactions can be used to investigate the reactivity of metals and extract metals from metal oxides.
