combustoin
Combustion is another name for burning.
In a combustion reaction, fuel is burned and reacts with oxygen to release energy.
The fire triangle summarises the three things needed for combustion - a fuel, heat and oxygen. If one of these things is removed from a fire, the fire goes out.
When fuels burn in combustion reactions, they release useful thermal energy (heat). Combustion reactions are used to heat our homes, power most cars, and to generate a lot of our electricity.
impacts
climate change. Global warming. Increasing carbon dioxide levels, Greenhouse effect
The weather includes the wind, sunshine and rain you see from day to day. The climate is the sort of weather seen over years and decades. Climate change and its effects as a result of global warming includes:
-
-
-
plastics
-
Polymers are usually chemically unreactive. This is a useful property because it means that plastic bottles will not react with their contents. Unfortunately, it makes polymers difficult to dispose of. They do not rot away very quickly and they can cause litter problems.
fossil fuels
Crude oil, coal and gas are fossil fuels. They were formed over millions of years, from the remains of dead organisms:
-
-
Fossil fuels are non-renewable. They took a very long time to form and we are using them up faster than they can be replaced - once they have all been used up, they cannot be replaced. Fossil fuels are also finite resources. They are no longer being made or are being made extremely slowly.
crude oill
Fractional distillation is used to separate crude oil into simpler, more useful mixtures. This method can be used because different hydrocarbons have different boiling points.
heated crude oil enters a tall fractionating column, which is hot at the bottom and gets cooler towards the top

fracking
Fracking could exploit shale gas and oil, which would increase supplies of fossil fuels
a pipe 2-3 km down filled with water to crak the shale and left for 2-3 months then is sucked out for all of the oil
