GUTS- get us there safe
How to build an IIF culture
Risk threshold/tolerance- Each individual has their own risk threshold. This is something we must be aware of, and must adjust when we are planning our work. Risks that we are comfortable taking personally, does not mean they are risks that we should take with our work.
NOTES
Basic outline
IIF: Incident and Injury Free. (It's a philosophy. It isn't a goal or a policy. It's a mentality)
LESSONS LEARNED AND REPORTING SLIDES. But when there is an incident. IIF approach is to dive into every incident, no matter how minor it may seem, so that we as a project team can learn from it and improve. An approach of continued learning.
As leaders, the expectation is that you encourage reporting. Be aware of unintended consequences of incentivizing not having incidents. Be mindful of the flipside of this- termination for safety infractions is not always the right solution as this can also lead to a decrease in reporting as well.
What is an incident: broad term used to encompass when something doesn't have the outcome that has been determined to be acceptable. This includes near misses, injuries, property damage, etc.
Maybe include a slide with some examples of incidents?
How do we get there? CHANGE THE MINDSET- reporting, lessons learned, coaching vs. punishment, policy, quality leadership, education,
Go into each of these in detail.
COACHING WORKERS AND QUALITY LEADERSHIP. How to correct unsafe behaviors the right way (see Myles' Safety Leadership Training)
Respect, ask questions, determine if further training may be required.
POLICY AND EDUCATION
What kind of programs does your company have that can help achieve IIF? I AM SAFETY (culture based), 12 Cardinal Rules (policy), F5 (policy),
Following policies can help shape culture. Policies help us fill in the gaps that culture never will. But creating a good safety culture helps ensure that policies are followed.
Confined space, WAH, etc. are all activities that have a greater potential for serious injuries and incidents. That's why we have the HRA program and the focus on the 21% of unsafe acts and conditions that have greater potential to lead to SIF- serious incident or fatality.
consistency is key, encourage questions, sharing information from whiteboard meetings with crews to keep them informed, good housekeeping, providing the right PPE (size, material, etc.), QOL - quality of life
