Perceptive: it involves letter, words, punctuation, graphemic symbols
Selective: recognition of lexical, grammatical, or discourse features
Interactive: readers bring to the text a set of schemata for understanding
Extensive: learner's global understanding of a text

It can be presented in any literate culture.
Academic reading: General Interest articles, technical reports, reference material, textbooks, essays, papers, test directions
Job-related reading: messages, letters, memos, reports, schedules, labels, signs, forms, applications, financial documents
Personal reading: newspapers and magazines, e-mails, greeting cards, invitations, messages, texts, notes, lists, blogs, schedules
Microskills, macroskills and strategies for reading
Microskills: 1. discrimate among the distinctive graphemes, 2. Retain chunks of language of different lenghts, 3. Process writing at an efficient rate of speed
Macroskills: 1. Recognize the rhetorical conventions, 2. Recognize the communicative functions, 3. Infer context, 4. Described events, 5. Literal and implied meanings
