Gender inequality in the workplace is a bias from male to female.
Bias
Stereotypes: a way of grouping people which often is not based in truth. For example, people think all Chinese people are good at mathematics, but in reality, not all Chinese people are good at maths.
Stereotypes about women
Women aren't strong. In reality, not every woman is strong but we can't say all women aren't strong. There are lots of examples of very strong female athletes etc.
Women wear make up for men. In reality, women wear make up for themselves, to help them feel happy and help them feel pretty. Feeling good leads to good emotions. Some men wrongly think that women wear make up to look good for them and to flirt with them.
Women should stay at home and take care of the home and the family. In reality, some women might want to do that and hopefully they can have that life, but other women want to have a career.
Source 5: bias that women should put marriage and family first in their lives. This thinking happens globally. Even in developed cities, there is still a difference between men and women hiding somewhere.
Some women might want to have marriage and children first, but they should have the choice. Traditionally in China, women should get married around 18 years old and have a baby boy. Some women become pregnancy machines and just have lots of babies for the family. Even now, some families still have this thinking. This traditional thinking still has influence over modern thinking, and causes bias against women in the home and workplace.
Baby boys were wanted more than baby girls because they want someone who can continue their business and the things their family owns. If it's a girl, the girl gets married and becomes part of her husband's family. Their job is to cook and to clean and to look after children. This still happens in some families in some parts of China.
Women want to break down this traditional thinking. they want to prove themselves. Women want to show that they also have the ability to run the family business.
Unconscious bias: is a bias that you don't know you have. You're unaware of it.
Gender bias is "tendency to prefer one gender over another" (source 2). "Gender bias is often used to refer to the preferential treatment men receive- specifically white, heterosexual males" (source 2). It is unfair to women. Some men think women are not powerful; not equal.
Black women and LGBTQI+ women receive even more bias
Examples of gender inequality in the workplace (source 1 has lots of examples)
Unequal pay
Unbalanced work. Flexible work time is not offered to women to help them balance their work and family.
This example of gender inequality might link back to the bias / stereotype that women should be at home. If a company doesn't offer a flexible work time arrangement for women, it shows that the company does not respect women. If a company DOES offer flexible work times, it shows that the company wants to be a good employer. It shows that want to support women, and it shows that they value the good work women can do.
barriers to promotion. More promotion chances are given to men than women because they trust males more than females.
Sexual harassment. One third of women in the USA have experienced sexual harassment in their workplace.
How can this bias be stopped? How can the thinking of men change to stop the inequality between men and women in the workplace?
Women can do something (eg run their own business) and show men what they are capable of.
Mothers can give some education to their children about sexism and that it is unfair to judge somebody because of their gender.
Parents are the best example for their children. She can make decisions which show her capability to her children.
Families could work out a balance of responsibility in the home, with men also helping with chores, and women heading out to work.
Why might men NOT want to address gender inequality in the workplace?
The bias is good for them. It gives them benefits. For example, more opportunity for promotion and higher wages.
They just think it is how it is. It is common. They don't know that they need to stop their bias.
