Natural law (Aquinas and telos)
Strengths on Euthanasisa
Natural law prevents individuals from playing God and making decisions about the lives of others
Life is valuable regardless of anyones judgement about its quality
Avoids the slippery slope of when life becomes less significant
Weaknesses on Euthanasia
It is overly religious and dependent on its Christian roots
Natural law can be absolutist. eg. Daniel James - talented rugby player who broke his spine and was left paralysed from waist down. He could not adjust to relying on his parents and carers to help him to everything and after many unsuccessful sucidie attempts his parents took him to Dignitas. His own parents justified his decsion.
Natural law requires individuals to live even when they are in extreme pain. A utilitarian would argue that the reduction of pain and quality of life would be better.
