variation
Variation is the differences between individuals of the same species, caused by genetic and environmental factors.
Surveys into variation give data that are continuous, which means to come in a range, or discontinuous, which means to come in groups.
inheritance
-
Some variation is passed on from parents to offspring, via genes during reproduction. This is inherited variation.
Some variation is the result of differences in the surroundings, or what an individual does. This is called environmental variation.
natural selection
Evolution explains how better adapted organisms have an advantage and are more likely to have offspring with this same adaptation.

fossils
A fossil is the preserved remains or traces of a dead organism. Fossils are found in rocks and can be formed from:
Hard body parts, such as bones and shells, which do not decay easily or are replaced by other materials as they decay.
Parts of organisms that have not decayed. For example, dead animals and plants can be preserved in amber, peat bogs, tar pits, or in ice.
Casts or impressions, such as footprints or burrows. These become covered by layers of sediment, which eventually become rock.

classification
Classification attempts to impose a hierarchy on the complex and dynamic variety of life on Earth by describing how different species group together and how they are related to one another or not.
'Domain' is the highest rank and 'kingdom' is the second highest rank in the sequence of classification.
