structure of the league of nations
the relationship between the general assembly and the conference of ambassadors was unclearly defined, and the conference often made decisions on behalf of the league
for the league of nations to agree to take action required unanimous vote by the council ( britain, france, italy, japan and four other countries )
it was difficult to get everybody to agree because different countries had different interests
furthermore, the countries held vetopwer on any of the league's actions, preventing the LoN from taking any decisive action should be one country in the council disagree
limited membership
many of the european countries were facing economic problems and were militarily weak from their efforts in world war 1. thus, each country sought to rebuild as its own strength and did not want to get involved in other countries conflicts
USA: they preferred to engage in foreign affairs on their own terms at their own pace
GERMANY: was not allowed to join because of it role in causing world war 1
THE SOVIET UNION: not allowed to join as it was seen as a threat due to its communist ideology, large size and population
Lack of authority
condemnation: it failed to dissuade powerful nations, which ignored the league's condemnation
military sanctions: - league did not have an army to enforce - member states did not want to get involved in a military sanctions
economic sanctions: - members of the league did not want their economy to be affected -eg: britain and france's attitude towards italy in 1935-6 during abyssinian crisis
post-war attitudes of nations
ww1's damage made countries worried about their own domestic situations
powerful countries were more interested in solving their own problems
countries did not want to get involved in another war, instead of choosing to appease any aggressors
the atmosphere of distruct that remained after the war further affected relations between the powers, contributing
