Topic 12 (Part 2) : System for computer aided teaching and learning technology
Experimental evaluation
Evaluator chooses hypothesis to be tested
a number of experimental condition are considered which differ only in value of some controlled variable
controlled evaluation of specific aspects of interactive behaviour
changes in behavioural measure are attributed to different conditions
factors
subject (who-representative, sufficient)
variables (things to modify and measure)
hypothesis (what you's like to show)
experimental design (how you are going to do it)
Hypothesis
Prediction of outcome
Framed in term of IV and DV
Null hypothesis
state no difference between condition
aim is to disprove
Variables
independent variable (IV) (characteristic changes to produce different conditions)
dependent variable (DV) (characteristic measure in the experiment)
experimental design
within groups design
transfer of learning possible
less costly and less likely to suffer from user variation
Each subject perform experiment under each condition
between groups design
Each subject perform under only one condition
no transfer of learning
more users required
Analysis-types of test
non-parametric
do not assume normal distribution
less powerful
contingency table
classify data by discrete attributes
count number of data item in each group
parametric
robust
powerful
assume normal distribution
Analysis of data
choice of statistical technique
Type of data
discrete- finite number of values
continuous- any value
before
look at data
save original data
