Participant and non-participant observations
Non-Participant Observation
It is carried out simply by observation.
It is used to avoid the risk that people may be affected by the presence of a researcher in the social group
It is also used when groups are not willing to cooperate with the research
Alows researchers to investigate people in normal social situations
It dosent allow the researcher to investigate the meanings people attach to the behaviour that is being observed.
Participant observation
Strengths and Limitations
Limitations
Researchers may lose their objectivity if they come to identify strongly with the group
Covert research involves the researcher to give a lot of time and energy for it.
The researcher needs social characteristics that will allow them to join the group
It is unlikely that generalisations can be made about other groups
Reliability is low
It may affect the behaviour of the group
Strengths
Deep understanding is obtained
High in validity
Used to delvelop an understanding of the world from the point of view from the subjects that are being researched
For this researchers involve themselves in investigations and put themselves in the same position as the people they are studying
Overt Participant Observation
The group being observed knows that the research is taking place
Covert Participant Observation
The group being observed doesnt know that the research is taking place
