The Apostles
Apostolic Succession, the bishops are the continuing line that came from the apostles. The bishops are picked by the Pope. The first Pope Peter was picked by Christ to fill this position. The bishops constitute the key line to future Popes.
Saul of Tarsus, was originally someone who hunted down Christians, as we know from the martyrdom of St. Stephen. He occupied the Pharisee class in Judaic society. Whilst riding to Damascus he had a vision of Christ asking why he persecutes him. He prayed to God and was baptized as a Catholic. He changed his name to Paul.
Church History
The Council of Nicaea, this was the first ecumenical council that dealt with the relation between Christ and God. Was Christ all man but with divine inspiration? Did Christ even have a body or was he merely only appearing to us. It was decided he was all God and all Man. In addition, this council led to the Nicene Creed which professes Christ's nature both human and divine.
Eastern Orthodox Church, when the Roman empire fell in the West, this divided the Catholic Church in two as there would now be a Pope of the Byzantine empire which had its capital in Constantinople.
Crusades, were eight military campaigns on behalf of the Pope whilst the early crusades were asked for by the eastern Church. It was an attempt to recapture Jerusalem and to seize more holy sites. These crusades also dealt with solidifying their territory in France as well as the Balkans. This mostly dealt with pagans whilst the eastern campaigns were fought against Muslims or replacing the Byzantine emperor.
Protestant Reformation
Luther was the founder of Lutheranism. This sect started when Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the doors of the Wittenberg Castle church in Germany. Lutherans believe Christ to be both God and man by nature. They also don't recognize the Pope as their Church's supreme spiritual figure. As Catholics believe the Pope is infallible on matters of faith.
Calvin was the founder of Calvinism. This sect started in the 16th century (1500s) and was located around the Switzerland nation and then spread to France and the Netherlands. The main doctrine that separates them from other Protestant sects is that they believe in predestination. This means God already knows who will enter Heaven before anyone dies or is born.

Marcion was a theologian that preached Christ had a dual nature. Christ was a spiritual entity of God on earth in a human body. This was considered heresy by Catholics.
Christian Gnosticism states that God sent his only son to die for our sins, so that we would know a path for salvation. This theology teaches the dualistic nature of Christ. Gnostics also believe they contain esoteric knowledge that helps grant them salvation. The Christian Gnostic movement was seen as heresy by the Church.
