Topic 11 (part 2): Universal design
Tips for maximizing student learning
highlight critical concepts
Repeat critical concepts, using multiple means
Provide / stimulate background knowledge
Avoid unnecessary jargon, complex terms
Class climate
model and demand respect
be approachable and accessible
welcome everyone
Motivate students (be positive and challenging)
Need to universalize assessment
Students often unclear on what is being tested
Many student with disabilities don't request testing accommodations
Many assessment measure reading and writing ability more than content being tested
Formative VS. Summative
Provide frequent and meaningful feedback
Reteach/review as indicated by assessments
Use multiple, formative assessments
Biweekly quizzes rather than one final exam
Examine student's progress along the way
Clarity
Give student scoring rubric as study guide
Provide plenty of "white space" on tests
Communicate what will be covered
Minimize time constraints when appropriate
Test what you teach
Need for guided notes
Dominant instructional mode is lecture (demands extensive note-taking)
Students typically take poor notes (quality completeness of notes strongly predict student outcomes)
what is it and how
Leave plenty of space
Don't require too much writing
Include additional resources such as URLs and references
Rationale
Consistent with UDI principles
Improve accuracy of notes
