Displacement Theory. According to some researchers (Anderson, Huston, Schmitt, Linebarger, & Wright, 2001), media used for entertainment may displace important developmental activities such as play, hobbies, games, sleep, studying, reading, physical activities, and social engagements, especially conversations with family and friends. For example, the active process of reading a book—imagining characters, developing vocabulary, and appreciating plot development—might be displaced by the passive process of watching TV or a movie.
