History
The Basilica Cathedral of Saint Denis (finished 1140 in France) is considered the first Gothic building.
The movement started in France, and then quickly became the standard for cathedrals around Europe.

Traits
Large windows (Vitrais) would be used to illuminate the cathedral and create a heavenly environment.

Rose windows (Rosáceas) are located higher, and represent Maria (when flowers) and Jesus (when suns).

English cathedrals tend to be more horizontal, while Italian tend to be more colorful.
The style was initially called opus Francigenum (French work), but the Renaissance, with its adoration of the classical style, gave it the name Gothic as an insult.
