Factors Influencing Food Choice
Religion/Faith
Islam - No pork, meat must be Halal which means that animals are slaughtered in a certain way where the blood is drained
Judaism - No pork or shellfish, meat must be Kosher which means that the meat has to have its blood drained.
Sikhism - No beef
Christianity - doesn't forbid meat, traditional that fish is eaten on fridays
Buddhism - religion preaches against killing, sometimes fish is eaten, being responsible for the death of another being is thought to lower your karma.
Hinduism - cow is sacred - forbidden to eat, no alcohol
Cost (Money)
Those with lower incomes may have to shop at supermarkets with cheaper prices and refrain from buying more expensive items.
However, those with a higher income may choose to shop at more expensive stores where the quality could be better
Enjoyment
Some people prefer the taste of sweeter things, we sometimes refer to these individuals as sweet tooths
Some people get more enjoyment out of less sweet foods, an example is the variety of chocolate
Trends
These usually become popular for a period of time and then are replaced by a more trendier food
Right now, the example is the "bucket list" which is chips served with many toppings
Seasonality
It probably tastes nicer
Cheaper
Less carbon miles
