Formative
Definition: Formative assessments assess students in order to get feedback to use to adjust or modify instruction. They are usually not taken for a grade but instead for the teacher's use.

Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Theses assessments are to assess where students are in their learning and to determine if they are on track for future assessments

Renaissance: An online test use by HISD to asses what grade level students are at in a specific subject.
Summative
Definition: Summative assessments are used to evaluate what students have learned at the end of a unit. They are usually taken for a grade.

Definition: These assessments are pre-assessments to determine students' strengths and weaknesses and misconceptions. They help teachers determine how to plan instruction.
