TYPES OF ASSESSMENTS
Summative
Definition: A summative assessment usually occurs at the end of a unit or large chunk of learning to evaluate student learning
Example 1: STAAR Test-Students take an end of year exam to evaluate the learning that took place in the classroom throughout the year in different subject areas like math, reading, science, etc.
Example 2: Final Exams- Students knowledge is evaluated in a particular subject at the end of multiple units to evaluate learning

Formative Assesment
Definition: an ongoing process to provide feedback for students, adjust instruction when things aren't working or when students need enrichments, and a chance to collect student data
Example 1: Exit Ticket-Students can answer a question and the teacher can provide immediate feedback about misconceptions or errors in thinking
Example 2: Discussion-Teachers can ask students varied questions to talk about the learning that has taken place in order to address misconceptions in learning

Interim/Benchmarked
Definition: Periodic testing throughout the school year with a more formal approach to track student progress
Example 1: ISIP-Teachers track their students reading progess at the beginning, middle, and end of each year through the ISIP test to monitor students achievements or gaps in learning and adjust instruction/plan for instruction accordingly
Example 2: MAP Test-Students math progress is monitored through the MAP test at the beginning and end of each year to ensure student growth
Performance
Definition: An open ended task that allows students to directly demonstrate their knowledge through performance of that skill or content
Example 1: Project-Students must demonstrate their knowledge by creating a project i.e a science project where students build a model of a food chain
Example 2: Essay-Students must demonstrate their knowledge of a particular subject by writing an essay based on that subject (research paper)
Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostic assessments will inform teachers of student achievement gaps through a set of questions that can pre-assess students knowledge
Example 1: Fact Fluency Assessments-Students have a short period of time to answer math equations and based on the whole class average, teachers will know how well their students know that operation
Example 2: Student Survey- Teachers can have students fill out a survey with questions asking about the topic they are going to learn about to get an idea of what the students already know or questions they may have (KWL chart)
