Summative
Definition: An assessment that measures and evaluates a students learning at the end of a unit or semester. Usually these assessments are high stakes and are measured against some form of a standard.
Examples

End of unit or Chapter tests: Tests given to students to evaluate their knowledge learned over a period of time.
Performance
Definition: An assessment that requires students to perform a certain task rather than take a test or answer questions to check for understanding.
Examples
Dramatic performance: Students can create, perform, or provide a response through a movement to represent content.
Exhibits: Students can display their work publicly. This shows in-depth learning and may include feedback from viewers.
Formative
Definition: An assessment used to monitor student's learning and provide ongoing feedback that can be used to adjust or improve teaching. Low stakes.
Examples
Draw your thoughts: Students will receive a piece of paper and must draw something they understood or learned from the content covered.
Think-pair-share: Students work together in pairs or small groups to answer a question, share their thoughts, or solve a problem related to the content covered.
Diagnostic
Definition: A type of pre-assessment that is used to determine student's prior knowledge and prior misconceptions. This information can help teachers plan instruction that best fits the classroom/individual student need.

KWL Chart: This chart is organized in 3 sections. What students know, want to know, and what they learn.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Interim/Benchmark assessments are used to determine at what stage students are at in their learning and whether or not they are on track to complete current content and future assignments.
Examples
STAAR: A Texas standardized test used to measure the academic knowledge learned by students in a particular grade level.
MAP: Measures of Academic Progress that students take on the computer that test them in reading and math.
