Formative
This is the process of gathering student evidence of learning. With this type of assessment, we can adjust based on the instruction. Involves participant feedback

Interim/Benchmark
Interim and benchmark assessments are another type of summative assessments. These test give the schools data regarding student understanding based off of a specific point in the year.
The start, middle and end of year assessments are benchmarks are they test the students in a summative manner regarding what they have learned in the beginning, middle and end of the year.
While not an example of an interim exam, these exams serve the school as a baseline for next year and help the future teachers of these students know what areas they should focus on. In the Houston ISD we use a benchmark exam called Renaissance 360 to gauge the students progress of all core subjects.
Performance
Students are required to explicitly demonstrate what they know and can do through open-ended tasks such as composing a response, producing a project, or executing an activity as part of a performance evaluation.
Composing a few sentences in an open-ended short response is a great way to perfrom a performance assessment as it will reveal if the student has the capicity to prove that they know what is needed to fully answer the question or what is being asked of them.
In math, this can be done by asking the student to explain why the correct answer is correct instead of asking them to choose the correct answer. This might also fall into the open ended question example but it begs the students to know more about the procedure involved to be able to show their performance in the subject.
Summative
Summative assessments are used to check student understanding at the end of a large chunk of learning and then you can review what you want to do. This requires measurement criteria for high-quality assessments.
Standardized testing qualifies for this type of assessments as it test the students over what they have learned throughout the entirety of the year. In Texas this would be known as the STAAR test.
Another example of this would be unit end test. These test can be teacher made but usually test over several TEKS explored in a unit. For example in a unite of summary they would test how to find the summary, what a summary is and how to write a summary. These test encompass the whole unit to test for student knowledge.
Diagnostic
Diagnostic assessment is the process of identifying student strengths and needs in specific skill areas using several tests and reports so that teachers can deliver teaching to meet those requirements. These assessments should NOT be for a grade.
Some of these diagnostic assessments can be screening. In the state of Texas kindergarten and first graders must be screen before the end of the spring semester.s appropriate for dyslexia and related disorders at appropriate times in accordance with a program approved by the state board of education.
Universal screenings also serve as diagnostic assessments. While they are done for all the students in the school at a certain grade level, they serve to set a base line for those students to provide data for future records if the student were to present difficulties later on or to be recommended for GT testing.
